Local 8th-grade QB has 2 college scholarship offers already
Samuel Johnson III is already a You Tube sensation.
He's only in the eighth grade.
He already has two offers; one from Akron, the other from Ohio University.
A quarterback headed to Southfield High School, the 6-foot-3, 178-pounder is in line to be the starting in August when the Bluejays take on Detroit Cass Tech at Wayne State in the Kickoff Classic.
"We've been told it's between him and other guy," said proud father Samuel Johnson II.
"I sent film online; he has a lot of film on You Tube and stuff like that. They saw his film online. In the middle school world there's already a big buzz about him. That's how they found out."
Akron coach Terry Bowden "said he wanted me to call coach (Tyrone) Wheatley from Michigan, and tell him that Akron football was the first one to offer you," Johnson told rivals.com. "At that point I was excited, and I couldn't believe it. I was speechless."
Rivals says that Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are among the schools that have expressed interest in the eighth grader.
Samuel III is 14-years-old and has been playing quarterback since he was 10.
Johnson III attends Oakley W. Best Middle School in Dearborn Heights, where his family lived before moving to Southfield. The thought of him handing the ball off to U-M recruit Matt Falcon in the season opener might not seem as far-fetched as it sounds.
"To be honest with you I was kind of leery about it, but they've been doing it in the South for so long, but it's kind of an unwritten rule in the Midwest," Johnson II said. "With my son he's a real humble kid. He's not a flashy guy. He's kind of shy."
Johnson has a 3.8 grade-point average and mom, Shwanda, and dad make sure he stays grounded with his PAL football years.
"It has drawn a lot of attention, but it hasn't bothered me," said Johnson II.
"There will be more offers," said Johnson II. "He first got the Akron offer then Ohio offered. My wife keeps him close. She's a football mom. Like I said, Sam has been getting a lot of attention in the middle school circuit for quite some time."
