The Ohio State football schedule 2021: Meet the Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Ohio State will be living on Tulsa time during Week 3.
No, the Buckeyes aren't traveling to Oklahoma in September, but they are hosting their first non-conference, non-Power 5 team of the season on Sept. 18 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
It is the first time the Buckeyes have played the American Athletic Conference program since 2016, which was the first time the two teams ever played. Ohio State won 48-3.
Tulsa has quietly built a strong college football program over the decades as their 35 conference championships are sixth all-time, two spots behind Ohio State which has won 39 conference titles. That is good for fourth all-time.
Tulsa has lost its last two games against Power 5 teams, both being close defeats. Tulsa lost 16-7 to Oklahoma State and was defeated in the Armed Forces Bowl 28-26 by Mississippi State last year.
Tulsa's last win over a Power 5 opponent came in December 2012 when the Golden Hurricane beat Iowa State 31-17 in the Liberty Bowl.
Here's what we know about the Tulsa Golden Hurricane
What Tulsa football did in 2020
Coming off a 4-8 season in 2019, Tulsa rebounded with a 6-3 season led by a strong defense. Tulsa won the Western Division of the AAC and played in the conference championship game against the University of Cincinnati.
The No. 6-ranked Bearcats beat Tulsa 27-24.
Tulsa saw linebacker Zaven Collins taken No.16 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft this spring.
What the Golden Hurricane are expected to do in 2021
The Golden Hurricane should compete for a conference championship with 21 returning starters, according to the schools' athletic department.
However, one of the positions Tulsa won't be returning a starter at is quarterback. Whoever is under center will have all five returning starting offensive linemen in front of him and the school's fifth all-time leading rusher, Shamari Brooks, behind him.
Defensively, the loss of Collins, an All-American who won the Nagurski, Bednarik and Lombardi awards last season, will hurt. But the return of a pair of second-team all-AAC players in Cristian Williams, Justin Wright and 6-foot-5, 256-pound end Anthony Goodlow will help. Safety Kendarian Ray, the team's leading tackler, also returns.
Who is Tulsa football coach Philip Montgomery?
Philip Montgomery's rise to Tulsa head coach came as he was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for disgraced former Baylor coach Art Briles. Montgomery worked with Briles at both the high school level in Texas and then became the coach's running back and quarterback coach at Houston.
He left with Briles for Baylor where he coordinated some of the best offenses in college football and helped Robert Griffin III win the Heisman Trophy.
Montgomery left Baylor in 2014 to become Tulsa's head coach. He has compiled a 31-40 record as he enters his seventh season and has led the program to three bowl games.
