Troy Smith, a former Ohio State quarterback who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy, has been released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Smith started the first six games before being placed on the six-game injured list.

He completed 83 of 174 passes for 989 yards, with four touchdowns and four interceptions, as Montreal sputtered to a 1-5 start before he was idled by knee, ankle and thumb injuries.

Smith was picked in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens and played parts of three seasons with the team. He also played in six games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 before joining the Omaha Nighthawks of the defunct United Football League.
