Speaking to a court full of Ohio State fans Thursday night, coach Chris Holtmann promised them that an attractive opponent had just been added to the schedule.

“Our schedule is in the process of being finished,” Holtmann said while speaking as part of THE Foundation’s Spring Festival at Value City Arena. “We just added a top-20 team this week that will come to the Schott the first or second game of the season. We’re really excited about that addition to our schedule as well as some phenomenal other out-of-conference games.”

That top-20 team will be Texas A&M, The Dispatch has confirmed. The game will be the first in a home-and-home between the programs as Ohio State will go to College Station in the 2024-25 season and is likely to be the second game of this season for the Buckeyes

The Aggies went 25-10 last season, earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament and took a first-round loss to Penn State. It was the program’s first March Madness appearance since 2018 and came in coach Buzz Williams’ fourth season.

Ohio State and Texas A&M have met three times previously and the Aggies have won the last two. The most recent game was played Nov. 23, 2007, at Madison Square Garden as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Texas A&M won that game, 70-47.

ESPN has the Aggies at No. 17 in its “way too early” 2023 preseason rankings.

Ohio State will participate in the CBS Sports Classic this season and is playing in the Emerald Coast Classic that also features Alabama, Oregon and Santa Clara. The Buckeyes will also play West Virginia in Cleveland on Dec. 30. More schedule details are still being confirmed.

The game gives Ohio State at least one marquee non-conference home opponent after a light schedule last season. The Buckeyes played six high-major teams from outside of the Big Ten at Value City Arena last season: Robert Morris, Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, St. Francis (Pa.), Maine and Alabama A&M.

The other five games were against North Carolina at Madison Square Garden in the CBS Sports Classic, at Duke in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge and San Diego State, Cincinnati and Texas Tech in the Maui Invitational.
