Stephon Gilmore trade speculation with New England Patriots includes Arizona Cardinals
New England Patriots star Stephon Gilmore is skipping his team's mandatory minicamp, setting off a wave of trade speculation and rumors surrounding the cornerback.
The Arizona Cardinals are in the middle of a lot of that speculation.
Could Arizona trade for Gilmore? What would they have to give up to get him?
Would they be able to afford him?
Check out what some NFL writers are saying about Gilmore, who is seeking a new contract, and his potential fit with the Cardinals in a trade.
CBS Sports: Cardinals among "most logical" landing spots for Stephon Gilmore in a trade
Cody Benjamin writes: "Few teams are as enamored with paying older stars (i.e. J.J. Watt, A.J. Green) this offseason, and the Cards can't be overly confident that Malcolm Butler and Darqueze Dennard will produce post-Patrick Peterson at corner. Such a move might dictate they make a separate deal to rid themselves of Chandler Jones' contract demands, but they've been aggressive."
Sportnaut: Cardinals an "ideal" trade scenario for Stephon Gilmore
Vincent Frank writes: "The loss of franchise stalwart Patrick Peterson to the division rival Minnesota Vikings has left a major void at cornerback in Arizona. The team attempted to rectify that by signing former Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler. But he simply isn’t the answer opposite Robert Alford. Relying on rookie fourth-round pick Marco Wilson also doesn’t seem to be a good idea with the likes of Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo in the NFC West. Instead, the always active Steve Keim could look to pull off a blockbuster trade for Gilmore. He would count just north of $7 million against the cap for an acquiring team. Meanwhile, Arizona could save a whopping $15.5 million by trading edge rusher Chandler Jones. He’s said to be on the trade block and might be a redundancy with J.J. Watt now in the desert."
SB Nation: Cardinals need to be eyeing Stephon Gilmore
Seth Cox writes: "If you are the Arizona Cardinals, this is the move you need to be eyeing more than any other. Gilmore is still one of the elite cornerbacks in the NFL and would give the Cardinals the leader and cornerback one they team is lacking. He would also allow the Cardinals to decide how they want to deploy Byron Murphy and Malcolm Butler. It would probably make the Cardinals offseason one of the best in the league. However, what can the Cardinals give up and how much would they be willing to pay Gilmore in an extension? Those are of course the big hangups, but as far as the player goes, he would be a nice cherry on top to a good Cardinals offseason."
Fansided: Cardinals should trade for Stephon Gilmore
Aarron Van Buren writes: "If there is any player Arizona should trade for, it’s Stephon Gilmore from the New England Patriots. Gilmore will only have a cap hit of around $7.7 million in 2021 if he’s traded to another team, which is a way more affordable number than what Jones would have."
Cards Wire: Trade for Stephon Gilmore would be expensive, but worth it
Alex Sutton writes: "The Cardinals would love to have a player like Gilmore to finalize their secondary to pair with what should be one of the NFL’s premier front-sevens. The Cardinals would likely have to part ways with a decently high draft pick in 2022 for Gilmore’s services and he is rumored to be wanting a new contract. If the Cardinals and Patriots could work out a deal for Arizona’s 2022 second or third rounder, it could be worth it even with the looming contract."
FanDuel: Cardinals among most likely trade destinations for Stephon Gilmore
Max Staley writes: "The Arizona Cardinals have a pretty huge hole at cornerback. But on the surface, this team doesn't appear to have enough cap space to make a move like this. However, Arizona can free up around $10 million by releasing CB Robert Alford and TE Maxx Williams. That should allow the Cards to open up enough space for a 1-year rental of Gilmore. For a team that just went all in to sign J.J. Watt, a move like this makes a ton of sense."
Bleacher Report: Cardinals "ideal" trade partner with Patriots for Stephon Gilmore
Alex Kay writes: "With that in mind, don't sleep on the possibility that the Pats still elect to trade Gilmore. Although nothing concrete has materialized early in the offseason, the veteran defensive back should still garner at least a second-round pick. The Arizona Cardinals, who are putting together a contender and already made a splash signing with J.J. Watt, are an ideal candidate to trade with."

This isn't the first time Gilmore has been linked to the Cardinals in trade speculation.
Could Arizona trade for him in 2021?
Count Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins as someone who would like to see the team acquire the cornerback.
The star wide receiver took to Instagram on Tuesday to make the case for Gilmore to be traded to Arizona.
"Best corner in the game from South Carolina," Hopkins posted with a photo of Gilmore defending him in a game last season. "let him know it's love Red Sea!"
